CRITIQUE THE REST — THANKS

CHAPTER 3

“Are you lost little girl?” The way he said this reminded me of little red riding hood, which would make him the big bad wolf.

Rolling my eyes, I answered him in a mocking tone, “No I’m on my way to grandma’s house”

He quickly caught on to my thoughts. “Better be careful of that big bad wolf, I hear he ends up eating the little girl.”

“Really . . . As I recall the hunter comes along and saves the day.”

He looked around in a showy display, obviously searching for the hunter, and coming up short.

He leaned in close as if to tell me a secret. “I think your hunter took a vacation . . . and I am starting to get hungry.”

“See, but that’s where the twist comes into play.

“Ooh I just love a twist.” He moved himself even closer.

I pointed to myself, “This little girl has some special kick ***** talents that can outwit even the most savage beast.”

As we stood facing each other, he had an amused smirk on his face and raised an eyebrow inquisitively at me. The stranger was fairly tall with spiky blonde hair. He had a very hard face that was drop dead gorgeous, but I knew it also could make any man squirm with fear. Though it was dark outside, I could tell he was very pale like me and he had a nice lean body not bulging with muscles, but I knew without a shadow of a doubt he could put a hurt to anybody stupid enough to cross him — Vampire, I thought to myself, he had to be. I was drawn to this stranger the same way I had been drawn to Lucas. Not that any of that mattered I was through with dating. Once bitten, twice shy — End of Story.

We continued staring each other down — Dead silence . . . Even though I didn’t want to be the first to break the silence I also didn’t want to stand here all night.

“Well if you’re not going to eat me Mr. Wolf I have other things to do.” I tried to come off as if I wasn’t affected by his devilish grin.

“Wolf . . . hmm how ironic.” He took a moment to enjoy his inside joke.

“Actually I don’t like to scare off the other little ones so I go by Ash, and it was a pleasure to meet you. I hope to experience more pleasures with you in the future.” Oh lord, I’ve heard it all. Time to leave! I moved to get around him and he moved at the same time. So I awkwardly moved to the other side and he mimicked my movement.

“Ok! We can’t keep doing this all night” I was starting to get irritated.

“Well we can, but we probably shouldn’t. We would definitely stand out.”

“Would you mind letting me pass; I really don’t feel like playing this game of cat and

mouse at the moment?” He seemed to get a kick out of that. I knew he just loved going back and forth like this.

“But it’s my favorite game.” He raised his eyebrow and displayed a sly grin. Definitely a bad boy, well I guess I had that coming. Be careful what you wish for or so the saying goes.

“If you ever want to test out your special “talents” on me I always hang out at the hole in the wall down the street. I’m there practically every night, and I would be more than happy to make sure you get to grandma’s house safely.” That’ll be the day. I thought to myself. Ugh and the way he said talents made me want to punch him in the face. He stood there casually waiting for my response. I could be rude and say not in your lifetime dude, but he didn’t wait for a response.

He shrugged and said “well if you change your mind about that cat and mouse I’d love to go a few rounds.” No thanks I’ve played more than enough rounds in my life and in the end I always came up the loser. I sadly reflected to myself. He smiled a devious smile. And I quickly moved around him. I had a small notion that he let me make this move. I’m fairly positive, had he wanted to continue this dance we would have been there all night.

“I never caught your name.” He called back to me.

“That’s because I never gave it.” Against my better judgment I smiled a wicked smile and gave him a wink as I hurried away. I could hear his deep laughter as I found my way back to my truck.

* * *

The next morning was a busy one for me. I had to register at the community college and

look for work. Not that I couldn’t live off my inheritance for a good amount of time, but I preferred not to rely on the money like that. It was more of an emergency fund, or a back up plan in case something went awry. Besides I enjoyed working and keeping busy.

The local community college wasn’t what I was used to at all. I was expecting a large college campus like at home, with tons of students fighting for parking and cutting each other off in attempts to steal any open parking space. While other students who were attempting to walk across the parking lots had to dodge the fast-flying cars that were speeding recklessly through the lots. This campus was calm and quiet. It was maybe compiled of five or six large separate buildings. No students around just a few cars parked in a medium sized lot. I noticed the front office immediately. I parked right up front and realized I was actually nervous about my next adventure. I was almost skipping to the front door.

The atmosphere was cheery; not at all what I had expected. The girl at the front desk was very petite and cute. She had straight blonde hair and wore a pink head band which made her look fifteen. When I took a closer look at her face and I could see she had to be much older at least twenty or twenty-one.

I was a little behind in registering considering that classes started next Monday the 1st of September, but the receptionist assured me I would have no problem getting every class I wanted.

Looking over my options, I realized why it wouldn’t be hard. There weren’t many to pick from. All the basics were available and just a few odds and ends. So I signed up for all the morning classes I could. Morning classes I scoffed to myself. These are my mom’s kind of morning classes. The first one starts at 7:00am. At least I’ll be finished with all my classes by two, and I only have to go two days a week.

As the receptionist entered my information into her computer she was gawking at something she saw on my application. I allowed myself to hear her thoughts so I wouldn’t be surprised. “She’s divorced! . . . She can’t be she only looks Twenty-Two maybe this is wrong. Should I ask?” She thought this over and I knew it was coming.

“Um . . .” She stumbled on the words “I don’t mean to be nosy but I wanted to make sure you marked your status right.” She turned a little pink in her face.

“It’s right.” I smiled reassuringly.

“And your age?” She asked hesitantly.

“Twenty-five.” I was starting to get bugged by her obvious fascination with me.

Oh lord here comes some more. She couldn’t hold back the questions that burned to come out.

“You’ve been married and divorced? When did you get married?” She blurted out the words so fast she knew she was being rude but couldn’t help her curiosity.

“Yes to the first question, and when I was eighteen to the second question.” That throbbing pain in my heart returned as it always did when I thought about the life I once had. I was really uncomfortable and wanting more than anything to leave the room NOW. She knew she made a faux pas.

“I’m so sorry that was rude and embarrassing. Sometimes I just can’t seem to keep my big mouth shut. Ok well most of the time” She admitted shyly.

“This is why I have such a hard time meeting new people and making new friends. I’m just not able to stop talking see.” She said pointing to her mouth. She was talking so fast it softened my mood immediately. I think I could actually genuinely like this girl. Even though she was a bit rude, I found her kind of refreshing. It’s not every day you meet someone who says

exactly what they were thinking. Usually people tend to have a fake kind of politeness to their words. Ok not that refreshing, but at least she kept it honest.

She was looking at her desk in shame. I decided to let her off the hook and throw her a bone.

“Don’t think twice about it” I said lightly. “It’s nice to have someone know a little about me. If you don’t mind, let’s just keep this between us two girls.”

“Totally — Scouts honor” She held up two fingers to show she meant business. It seemed that neither of us knew what to say next.

Dead Silence . . . so I continued. “My name is Jade by the way.” She was in awe. Then like someone snapped her out of her trance she was once again doing her fast talking.

“I’m Janey Williams, and it’s so nice to meet you.” She rushed the words out like she couldn’t wait to hear what I would say next.

“Hey since I am new to this town I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime this week and give me a rundown on the neighborhood.” Probably a big mistake, but I kind of felt sorry for the friendless girl who talked too much.

“How can you possibly want to spend one more minute with me after I just made a complete fool out of myself?

“I’m a glutton for punishment.” I gave her a big friendly smile.

“Hey I’ll take what I can get . . . Wow. You totally just made my whole year. Okay this is me shutting up now, before you change your mind. I’m such a dweeb.” She mumbled half of that to herself. Hmm I laughed to myself, funny girl.

“Why don’t we exchange numbers and I’ll give you a call later this week?” For once she was speechless, we silently exchanged numbers. We both smiled and said our goodbyes. I could

almost feel the happiness radiating out from her smile. I would never tell her, but our encounter made my day too. This new friendship definitely had potential, and finding a true friend was a rare treasure.

Satisfied with my new class schedule and newly acquired friend I decided I accomplished some very fulfilling goals so I would call it a day.

Watching the sunset was always so breathtaking to me, but on top of this beautiful lonely hill swinging on my aunt’s swing was a whole new euphoric feeling. I was so caught up in my thoughts that I didn’t notice the darkness descend upon me. Through the trees I thought I saw something move, I stayed frozen to the swing. Motionless, I stood there waiting for my assailant to make his move. Time seemed to stand still . . . then I noticed other shadows all around me. I convinced myself it was just the shadows of the trees dancing along the lawn. Stop being such a girl! I scolded myself. Then I began to think of what I would do the rest of the week. I decided I would head over to the local elementary school and see if they had any teaching positions open. It’s not as if I didn’t have more than the required units to secure just about any teaching position I desired.

Some wonder why I keep taking so many classes. I guess I have always felt that if you don’t use it you lose it. Plus I’ve always loved learning something new. There’s so much this world has to offer it would be such a waste to let it pass on by.

Eager to start the next day I jumped off the swing like a little kid being dared to swing as high as they could and then jump. I landed with a light thump and flew up the porch steps. Once

I got to the safety of my door I gave the trees one last wary glance. That’s when my eyes focused and I saw what I feared the most. Not an innocent little cat, but a pair of black eyes lurking in the shadows.

Category Name: My Thoughts

I did not enjoy the chapter. The chapter was okay. I really enjoyed the chapter.

This section is for overall comments and general ideas. The score should reflect how much you enjoyed the chapter.

Category Name: Character Development

The characters were not credible, interesting or unique. I don’t care about or understand the characters because they were poorly developed. The characters where somewhat credible, interesting and unique. I partially understand their thoughts, feelings, and actions. I somewhat connected with and care about the characters. The characters where credible, interesting and unique. I thoroughly understand their thoughts, feelings and actions. I felt connected with and started to care about the characters.

This is act of bringing a character to life on the page. It is a combination of the author’s description of the character and the character’s dialog, action, and thoughts. Though all characters should be believable, the protagonist and antagonist are usually the most developed characters.

Category Name: Chapter Ending

If there is another chapter I don’t have any desire to read it. The ending was OK. I am not dying to know what happens next but I am interested in finding out. The ending left me craving the next chapter. I have to know what happens next.

Category Name: Setting

I don’t know when or where this chapter takes place. The setting was inadequately described or inappropriately used. I know when and where the chapter takes place but I can only vaguely picture it in my mind. The setting did not add to or distract from the chapter. I know when and where the chapter takes place. The setting enhanced the chapter and helped me better understand the characters or plot.

The setting is where a story takes place. The choice of setting and its description helps the story come alive in the mind of the reader. Appropriate setting contributes to the plot and mood of the story.

Category Name: Mechanics

The story contained so many mechanical errors that it was hard to follow the plot or understand certain sentences or paragraphs. Occasional mechanical errors were distracting, but these errors did not inhibit me from being able to understand the plot or connect with characters in the story. I rarely if ever noticed mechanical errors. As far as I could tell, the writing was clear and correct.

Mechanics includes sentence structure, verb agreement, grammar, spelling, voice, punctuation and aspects of basic style.

Reviewers should not feel obliged to point out every grammar or spelling error (though they certainly can if they wish), but should focus on this area only to the degree that errors make a story hard to follow or understand.

Category Name: Dialog

The dialog caused more confusion than clarification about the characters. It was almost impossible to follow. Some of the dialog helped me learn about the characters and revealed new facets of their personalities. I could follow the dialog when paying close attention. The dialog helped me learn about the characters and revealed new facets of their personalities. The dialog flowed well and was easy to follow.
