I've no problem doing assigned reviews, but I also like to read public stories that catch my interest and review them- I've done 10 stories, kept my excellent review rating, but I get nothing for them in return, none of them count to my uploaded works- plus my writing is not for all readers and I don't expect it to be- It's a fun read, but I take my writing quite serious and have edited each chapter better than 50 times before my first post-

with each chapter I get the comment 'this is not my type of thing, but i have to do it' then they precede to give me a terrible review and if i'm lucky a '3' rating-

wouldn't bitch if i got all 3s, but the other reviews are between 6-10-

I've also read a few stories that I had zero interest in, however I didn't let it effect my review-

isn't there some way i can get credit for my unassigned reviews, and can't somebody who can't get into the story exchange it for a public story-

I'm not a premium member, but asked both bad reviewers who felt this was a job to blacklist me, I'm more than happy to be blacklisted, instead of being told essentially 'your story is a piece of shit and not worth my time.'

I wish I had a viable idea here.I'm sorry, I don't. I can relate. I write poetry, almost exclusively. I bring my work feeling to the table after a great deal of fine tuning but open to hear some good constructive insight letting me know where it's weak, is it unclear.Trouble is, I, like you, try to give consistently helpful critiques (I've learned not to work too late at night when I can be a bit sarcastic) but sometimes the reviews are all over the place. I sometimes wonder if they give experienced reviewers, less experienced writers/reviewers? Seems as if I get every other reader who has something to offer me, not so bad, i guess. I don't really like the idea of blacklisting reviewers - how will they learn? But it is frustrating.

Patricia

thanks for your insight on the subject, and I have no intention of blacklisting a reviewer- I was thinking more of allowing them to blacklist the story (I have many stories in a wide range of genres) but don't even mind if they blacklist me in general- just think the reader should have the option of rather reviewing the story or not, like as in adding a pass button or giving the reviewer 7 stories to choose the 4 to review from-

I enjoy writing, reading and reviewing, but this assigned 4 sometimes makes you feel like a treed squirrel, which sort of gives you an attitude to start with- I never take this as work, (I'm seriously allergic to work, and try to never do it, however I would recognize it if I saw it) but can see how others might think it is work and it shouldn't be-

no one know hows to workshop on this site. They are like... "omg.. i dont understand this imagery because im a dumbass so ill give it a three." seriously. it pisses me off, especially since im used to being in work shopping classes with smart poets who know what the fuck they are talking about. just taking everything on this site with a grain of salt.

Uxi

guys.

this is an INTERNET site with people that neither PAY nor ARE PAID to review. Yes, that does mean that you're going to get graphomanic teens with too much time on their hands spawning out self-fulfilment purple prose and expecting others to do the same or no dice. I think we should all think ourselves lucky for finding this thing, because I have gotten more reviews out of reviewfuse than anywhere else on the internet. If you have a better place to go to where you think you'll get better reviews, please, do so )and tip me off about it).

I would advise not only to take everything on this site with a grain of salt, but also yourselves.

Uxi = a stereotypical dumbazz, internet bully. Post something, you ignorant inbred.

RhikkiSymphony

Ignoring the heated discussion over here, I've gotten some pretty bad reviews myself. And I rate them as such. I also try to use the dialog/comment box, and if I don't do such a great job on a review, I try and figure out why it isn't helpful. What I'm having a hard time understanding is (since we're all writers, and we're all trying to improve) it isn't in people's best interest to be more objective. I wonder if it's possible to make a focused group that you can only join if you get a certain reviewer score...

Pixie

maybe they should rename the site 'review refuse' ?

anton

This is a great site, and there have been some very great reviewers that I haven't heard from in a while. Just to mention a few: maxkeanu, Sallybrice,dirge87,writingwildly, vienna,willow,... there's more, but I can't remember every single one. Yeah, it's pretty frustrating when your review starts out with 'this isn't my typical thing', but I admire the ones that don't judge the theme and evaluate the style, wording, and any gramamtical errors that might have slipped by. I like to review others work with the same respect and dedication I'd like for my own work to be reviewed. Unfortunately, not everyone is in the same frame of mind. You've just got to submit your work and cross your fingers. Then, try to look beyond the harsh words, if any and find the usable part of the negative review.

LevanaHyll

I know I've been absent for a while. Been working on my second story and editing my first. I'll get back to reviewing soon enough.

Dirge87

Hey Levana--I've been thinking about you! Sallybrice just made the 1st cut on the Amazon Breakthrough Novel!1 YEAH!! I've missed her too. ;)

MamaQ

Hi, What name does sallybrice publish under?

LillieM

I think that one--that's what she listed on Amazon--Near to a Queen. She hasn't published yet. :) But she's going to , I suspect.. :)

MamaQ

Thanks, she did send me a message a while back. Gives the rest of us hope for the future.

LillieM

It sure does. Sally is good people. :) I hope she wins. :)

MamaQ

i didn't mean to start anything about a bad review it was more of if it's not your thing just don't do it- let the time pass and go on, because i get screwed out of an honest review or at least a helpful review- don't tell me it's your job and i'll try to slog through, find not even a spelling mistake then tell me you're being kind and giving me a 3-

first, you're being rude crapping on others work

second, you're being of no help whatsoever to either of us

third, you really can't expect me to give you a big 'atta boy/girl' here's your excellent grade i reply 'sorry this isn't my type of review, but i'll try to slog on through it, hope it'll be of help' then grade it appropriately- which now you're pissed at

fourth, i'm being denied 3 decent critiques and have given 4 excellent ones in exchange-

so fifth point- just wait it out, or tell the admin. they get enough of these requests maybe they can wave the wait- but don't tell me your time is more valuable than mine, but you'll try to be of help, cuz it ain't help

wizardwriter

Wizard, I don't mean to be foolish but.... What makes a review helpful to you? I think that we all notice our writing improve, the more we review things, and we notice things in our writing more because we take that step. Can we flesh out what we're looking for a little more here? That way people know what they need to do to get a better score, or to give you an honest review.

Pixie

what makes a review helpful to me is someone saying this isn't my thing but i'll try, then critique as normal- find nits small or major, then grade it as a piece of writing unbiased- but when i get, not a single thing wrong with the story (now, they might've lied and not bother to have read anything at all, cuz i'm sure they could've found something wrong, which is another wrong altogether) but give an overall 3 stars then tell me they're being kind to me- is a bit much- i've got a titanium hide and can withstand the harshest critique and whole-heartedly listen to the reviewer and rethink my position on the story, even fixing plenty of things because of suggestions- i'm not here to just get pats on the backs, ii want to put out the strongest piece i can-

when folks just mail in a review it's absolutely no help to me or them, as i stated before it's the exact opposite- truthfully, i don't give a rat's ass about getting stars and would be happy with three if it's a constructive 3, not a vengeful one because i supposedly took up their time- i've read chik-lit, ya, romance, ethnic, foreign ad everything else imaginable, which most doesn't hold my interest and never graded them because i didn't like the genre-

lately i even passed on a few, they were essays, poorly written, but an easy review, except i couldn't be any help to them- so i passed, granted those who hate my story might not know about letting it pass- but i'd never be so rude to tell someone this wasn't my thing, then review it just for credit, and not over a single piece of advice- worse of all they claim to be christians and that's why they hate it- yes, very christian of you
