As a writer, I think we all need to come out of our comfort zone.. A theme is challenging.. We can all write about things we know and are comfortable with. To be creative, we must each challenge ourselves to step out of the known and jump into the unknown. Why limit yourself to a box? Challenge yourself.. otherwise you limit yourself!

I think having themes are necessary to compel writers of different contexts, such as myself. I usually do not write poetry because I am mainly into writing screenplays, but if the given topic is intriguing enough I will force myself to write a poem. This was the case for my father's eulogy. In the case of this competition I am interested, because I have been to Spain, and I have seen a bullfight. I have formulated a good argument in regards to bullfighting, and now that this contest has caught my eye I think I will give it a stab! PS, if it weren't for catching a theme that interested me in the Hillerman Mystery Novel Contest, I would have never provoked myself to write a novel...so yes, I think themes are necessary to open up previously closed off writers such as myself.

Having a theme does put people (including me) off. I think people prefer to write about something they choose, not something assigned to them.
I would only be interested if the theme was removed.

[...] contests generally have a lot of submissions. However, the August 2009 Poetry Contest has only had a few people enter thus far. Does adding a theme to a contest make is less desirable? [...]
